🎬 Play the scenario below — make your decision, then see how it compares to history

The Best Hand in Poker

Pocket Aces (A♠ A♥) is statistically the best starting hand in Texas Hold’em. You’re roughly an 85% favorite against any single random hand pre-flop.

The Golden Rules

1. Always Raise Pre-flop

The biggest mistake beginners make with Aces is slow-playing them pre-flop. You want to:

  • Build the pot while you’re ahead
  • Reduce the number of opponents (multi-way pots are dangerous)
  • Get value from your premium hand

2. Standard Raise Size

A good raise is 3x the big blind plus one big blind per limper. In this scenario with no limpers, raising to $60 (3x $20) is standard.

3. Don’t Fall in Love Post-flop

Aces are one pair. If the board gets scary (three to a flush, four to a straight, paired board), be prepared to slow down or fold to heavy action.

Common Mistakes

  1. Limping - Never limp with Aces. You’re leaving money on the table.
  2. Min-raising - Too small. You give opponents great odds to see a flop.
  3. Overplaying post-flop - One pair is not a monster hand by the river.

The Math

  • Aces vs any random hand: ~85% equity
  • Aces vs Kings: ~82% equity
  • Aces vs a pair (like JJ): ~80% equity
  • Aces vs two opponents: ~73% equity
  • Aces vs four opponents: ~56% equity

Notice how your equity drops dramatically with more players. That’s why you raise to thin the field.
