The Mathematician
Chris “Jesus” Ferguson earned a PhD in computer science from UCLA and spent years studying poker as a problem of game theory and probability long before solvers were a household word. When he sat down to play, every decision was the output of a model running behind those mirrored shades.
The 2000 World Championship
Ferguson’s defining moment came at the 2000 WSOP Main Event, heads-up against the legendary T.J. Cloutier. On the final hand he called off with the dominated A♦9♣ against Cloutier’s A♠Q♥ — and rivered a nine to win the bracelet and $1.5 million. Six Bracelets and a Player of the Year
Ferguson backed up the title with a long, decorated career: six WSOP bracelets in total, the last at the 2017 WSOP, the same year he was named WSOP Player of the Year. He was also a co-founder of the online site Full Tilt Poker, which collapsed in 2011 — a controversial chapter that remains part of his story.
