Tom Dwan
"durrrr"
Dwan plays an ultra-aggressive style that puts maximum pressure on opponents. He's willing to fire multiple barrels as bluffs and isn't afraid to put his entire stack at risk. His fearless approach changed how high-stakes poker is played.
The Online Phenomenon
Tom “durrrr” Dwan burst onto the poker scene in the mid-2000s as an online prodigy. By age 21, he was playing in the highest stakes games in the world — and winning.
His screen name became legendary: durrrr.
Revolutionary Aggression
Dwan’s playing style was unlike anything the poker world had seen. He would:
- 3-bet and 4-bet light — Putting in raises with hands others would fold
- Fire triple barrels — Betting all three streets as a pure bluff
- Put pros to the test — Forcing even elite players into guessing games
This hyper-aggressive approach forced opponents to either adjust or get run over.
The durrrr Challenge
In 2009, Dwan issued the most famous challenge in poker history: he would play anyone heads-up for millions of dollars, giving them a significant advantage.
The conditions:
- 50,000 hands of heads-up poker
- Opponent starts with a $500,000 advantage
- If Dwan is up or within $500,000, he wins $500,000
Patrik Antonius accepted and played over 39,000 hands. Dwan was winning over $2 million when the challenge stalled.
Dan “Jungleman” Cates also accepted but the challenge was never completed.
No one beat durrrr.
High Stakes Poker Fame
Dwan became a fan favorite on GSN’s “High Stakes Poker,” where he routinely battled poker’s biggest names:
- Won massive pots against Phil Ivey
- Bluffed Daniel Negreanu in memorable hands
- Made the show’s most aggressive plays
His table talk and fearless betting made great television.

Dwan uses position expertly, knowing when to apply pressure and when to give up.
4. Mental Edge
His opponents know his reputation. That alone causes mistakes.
Modern Day durrrr
After stepping back from the spotlight for several years, Dwan returned to high-stakes play in the Triton Poker series, proving he can still compete with the best.
His 2019 Triton win for over $3 million silenced any doubters.
Legacy
Tom Dwan changed how aggressive poker is played. Before him, the highest stakes games were dominated by tight, cautious players. He proved that relentless aggression, backed by strong hand-reading, could crush anyone.
