The Set Mining Math
When you hold a pocket pair, the probability of flopping a set (or better) is:
11.8% or approximately 1 in 8.5
The calculation:
- You need one of the two remaining cards of your rank to appear
- Probability = 1 - (48/50 × 47/49 × 46/48) = 0.1184
Set Mining Strategy
“Set mining” is the practice of playing small to medium pocket pairs specifically hoping to flop a set. Here’s when it’s profitable:
The Rule of 15-20x
To profitably set mine, you need implied odds of at least 15-20x your pre-flop investment.
Example:
- Pre-flop call: $20
- You need to win: $300-$400 when you hit
Favorable Conditions
- Deep stacks (100+ big blinds)
- Opponents who can’t fold big hands
- Multi-way pots (more potential payoffs)
Unfavorable Conditions
- Short stacks (under 30 big blinds)
- Tight opponents who fold to aggression
- Heads-up pots (harder to get paid)
The Hidden Power of Sets
Sets are poker’s most profitable hands because:
- Disguised — Opponents can’t see your third card
- Dominating — You often cooler top pair or two pair
- Stack builders — They win the biggest pots
- Safe — Very rarely get outdrawn
Set Over Set
The nightmare scenario happens about 1% of the time when both players flop sets. When it occurs, expect to get all the chips in.
| Situation | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Both flop a set | ~1 in 100 |
| Higher set wins | ~96% |
| Board pairs (tie possible) | ~4% |
Beyond the Flop
Your chances of making a set by the river if you don’t flop one:
- By the turn: Additional ~4.3%
- By the river: Additional ~4.3%
- Total by river: ~19.2%
But remember — you’re paying to see those cards, and your set may no longer be good.
Practical Application
| Stack Depth | Set Mining Playable? |
|---|---|
| 100+ BB | Yes, profitably |
| 50-100 BB | Sometimes, position dependent |
| 30-50 BB | Rarely, only vs. loose players |
| Under 30 BB | No, use push/fold strategy |
