Pot Odds Explained: The Math Every Poker Player Needs

Pot odds are the foundation of poker math. Learn how to calculate whether a call is profitable based on the size of the pot and the cost to continue.

What Are Pot Odds?

Pot odds express the relationship between the size of the pot and the size of the bet you’re facing. They answer: “What percentage of the pot am I investing?”

The Basic Calculation

Pot Odds = Call Amount ÷ (Pot + Call Amount)

Example 1

  • Pot: $100
  • Opponent bets: $50
  • You need to call: $50
  • Pot odds: 50 ÷ (100 + 50 + 50) = 50 ÷ 200 = 25%

You’re investing 25% of the final pot to win it.

Example 2

  • Pot: $200
  • Opponent bets: $200 (pot-sized bet)
  • Pot odds: 200 ÷ (200 + 200 + 200) = 200 ÷ 600 = 33%

Pot-sized bets always offer 33% pot odds.

Comparing to Your Equity

Once you know your pot odds, compare them to your equity (chance of winning):

If Your Equity Is…And Pot Odds Are…Then…
Higher than pot odds25%+EV Call (profitable)
Lower than pot odds25%-EV Call (unprofitable)
Equal to pot odds25%Break-even

Quick Reference: Common Bet Sizes

Bet SizePot Odds You’re Getting
1/4 pot16.7%
1/3 pot20%
1/2 pot25%
2/3 pot28.6%
3/4 pot30%
Pot33%
2x pot40%

Practical Example

You have A♥K♥ on a board of Q♥7♥3♦2♣. You missed your flush draw, but have 9 outs (remaining hearts) to make your flush.

  • Your equity: ~20% (9 outs × 2.2)
  • Opponent bets half pot
  • Your pot odds: 25%

Since 20% < 25%, this is a losing call. You need better than 25% equity to call profitably.

Implied Odds

Pot odds only consider the current pot. Implied odds factor in future bets you might win:

When to consider implied odds:

  • You’re drawing to a disguised hand (like a flush)
  • Your opponent will likely pay off if you hit
  • Stacks are deep

When implied odds are weak:

  • Opponent is short-stacked
  • Obvious draw on the board
  • Opponent can fold to aggression

The Quick Math Shortcut

For draws, multiply your outs by:

  • 2 for one card to come
  • 4 for two cards to come (flop to river)

This gives you approximate equity.

Outs1 Card2 Cards
4 (gutshot)8%16%
8 (OESD)16%32%
9 (flush draw)18%36%
12 (flush + gutshot)24%48%
15 (flush + OESD)30%60%

Summary

  1. Calculate pot odds (call ÷ total pot)
  2. Estimate your equity
  3. Call if equity > pot odds
  4. Factor in implied odds when applicable

Master this, and you’ll make mathematically sound decisions at the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are pot odds?
Pot odds are the ratio between the current pot size and the cost of a contemplated call. They help you determine if calling is mathematically profitable.
How do I calculate pot odds?
Divide the amount you need to call by the total pot after you call. For example, if the pot is $100 and you need to call $20, your pot odds are 20/(100+20) = 16.7%.
What's the difference between pot odds and equity?
Pot odds tell you what percentage of the pot you're investing. Equity is your chance of winning. If your equity exceeds your pot odds, calling is profitable (+EV).
